J8-Bit vs. Larnny is a mod for the Friday Night Funkin’: Psych Engine. It includes four songs of the titular J8-Bit and Larnny rap battling against each other framed as a phone call.

Development history and retrospective

FNF: J8-Bit vs. Larnny was a smaller Friday Night Funkin’: Psych Engine mod conceived as a spur-of-the-moment idea between myself and a friend on Discord, Larnny. The way many FNF songs tend to handle vocals is through a “chromatic scale” featuring each individual note of a character’s voice; given both of us had shared one for each others’ main online persona, the thought of creating a song using both was discussed and later created by me. After composing two other songs for the mod (later making a fourth as a bonus) and creating charts for each one, an agreement was made to animate and illustrate our characters and corresponding background, framing it as a phone call discussing ideas for the mod.

Like the other FNF mods I’ve created, my responsibilities on the programming side of things involved using Lua scripting in order to create the environments and custom events for the mod. Along with these, a custom camera system was implemented in order to allow for a setting to center the game’s view between the two characters at command. I enjoyed working on the mod overall; Larnny was great to work with and neither side felt immense pressure or stress to complete the mod, which resulted in an overall smooth release.
