Development history and retrospective

FNF vs. Jinx was initially conceptualized as a single illustration — a bit of birthday fanart for an artist I really liked, jinx_doodle. The idea to develop it into a full “week” (set of levels) for Friday Night Funkin’: Psych Engine came to mind, music was commissioned from catsmirkk/Zeroh (a musician talented in the FNF style of production) and charts were made by Cheezo (a Discord friend of mine), but the project remained dormant for almost three years. Life got in the way; college classes were ramping up in difficulty and workload and my priorities were in different places. Upon the advent of the four-year anniversary of the initial gift, I committed to finishing the project lest it remain on the backburner forever.

Giving myself a week to finish the project gave me experience with scope, organization, streamlining production, and creating something within a deadline considering my capabilities. Having a smaller scope allowed me to experiment and innovate with an end product that was reasonable to achieve; though the characters and environment were in black and white, and the scene I created was simple and only included four characters, it inspired a visual effect where the singing characters would pulse an associated color with an arrow they sung, and the background characters would change the kind of dance they did to match the beat of the song. It was satisfying to complete the project and fulfilling given Jinx really liked it in the end. 🙂
